STONY RIVER

The Battle of Stones River was fought along the railway along Stones River, northwest of Murfreesboro from December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863. The troops spent the night before the battle roughly 700 yards from each other. That evening, a musical battle was fought with Union troops playing song selections and Confederate troops answering. The battle had the highest percentage of casualties in the Civil War. Part of the battleground became the first national cemetery in 1865, the first of its kind. 55" x 63" Designed for Amy Cotham
